Driving license renewal: how often should it be done and what changes with age?

In Italy, there is no maximum age beyond which driving is prohibited. The ability to continue driving depends on a person’s physical and mental fitness, as determined by a medical examination.

As you get older, however, the validity of your driving licence shortens and checks become more frequent.

Validity of the B driving licence based on age

For the B license, used for cars and light motorcycles, the validity is generally as follows:

  • Up to 50 years: renewal every 10 years
  • From 50 to 70 years: renewal every 5 years
  • From 70 to 80 years: renewal every 3 years
  • Over 80 years: renewal every 2 years

The actual duration may be reduced by the doctor if there are particular health conditions that require more frequent checks.

The medical examination is mandatory

At each renewal, you must undergo a medical examination to verify your fitness to drive.

During the visit the following are generally checked:

  • vision;
  • hearing ability;
  • general psychophysical conditions;
  • any pathologies that could affect driving safety.

In some cases, the doctor may request further specialist tests.
